A 'Learning Matters' awards 2017 Case Study.

The Natural Health Service has been running since 2012. The programme was initiated with support from Champs Public Health Collaborative to address four key issues:

1. A need to focus on a greater range of assets that could support improved community health

2. A need to have a coordinated approach from those involved in developing health programmes based in the natural environment to provide a focus for commissioners and enhance opportunities for collaboration

It was recognised by the Patient Participation Group of Court Thorn Surgery in Cumbria, who work closely with the GP Practice, that the services of General Practice are not the panacea of all ailments and care. Much can be done by the patients for the patients and their community. The balance of power can be shifted, to the patients and the public, by the provision of better information and advice.

• The student mentorship project runs throughout the year, supporting 3 local universities. The project looks to empower students with the skills and the knowledge to help deliver specialist palliative care for patients and families / carers affected by malignant and non-malignant life limiting illnesses.

• Students are offered placements across our three sites, with appropriate mentorship support. These may be elective or spoke placements

Community Links aspire to apply capacity building, through quality information, communication, learning, health improvement, food and drink and social interaction to achieve local resilient communities. Local social movements which grow up in streets, communities of interest and choice, doing things compatible with and acceptable to our medical and social models but by and for the people without imposition.

‘Fantastic’ - a new play from Pete Carruthers

This project began in 2015 when the team decided to produce a play that would explore themes around mental health and treatment, particularly the idea of what constitutes the dividing line between normal human experience and psychiatric disorders.

Funding was successfully secured from Arts Council England to undertake a research and development phase. This phase involved extensive research, including private research as well as interviews with health professionals and several experts by experience.

Liverpool Clinical Laboratories Traineeship Programme - Widening Participation in Action

The City of Liverpool and Merseyside Region has felt the impact over the last two decades of a loss of traditional apprenticeship and workforce supply routes with a consequential decline in vocational qualifications, which would have been made available to those in 16-24 year age range. The Liverpool City Region has seen increased unemployment with a subsequent increase in youngsters claiming job seekers allowance within this age range.

Youth Health Leaders in Blackpool Schools

This eWIN Case Study is about a Youth Leaders Programme in Blackpool. Practice Development Sister Sharon Vickers was concerned at the numbers of young people coming to hospital with lifestyle related problems such as alcohol dependency, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy and wanted to do something to help these young people take charge of their own wellbeing and prevent hospital admission. Mentor Toolkit to support Mental Health and Wellbeing

This Bitesize Case Study briefly explains the development and implementation of a Mentor Toolkit designed to provide practical guidance for mentors to support students in practice who may be experiencing emotional distress and/or issues relating to their mental wellbeing. The study is mapped to HEE's Quality Standards and explains what the team set out to do, what the intervention was and the Key Outcomes and Lessons Learned.
