Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (SRFT) is committed to the development and implementation of a process of managing individual employee contribution, which will lead to the creation of a performance-driven culture. Barriers to career development for black and minority eithnic NHS support workers

Since 2002 NHS North-West has provided support workers with the opportunity to undertake assistant practitioner training subject to available posts and success in the selection procedures. Although 25-30% of support workers identify as BME, their representation on the Trainee Assistant Practitioner programme is less than 2%.

Developing student placements within a Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)

A partnership between Edge Hill University, NHS South Sefton CCG, NHS Southport and Formby CCG and the North West Placement Development Network (NWPDN) has developed a project to provide nursing students with a placement in a CCG. They have highlighted the need for nurses to gain experience and knowledge of working in a CCG and to promote this as a possible career destination.

General Practice Workforce Investment

Over 90% of all patient contact occurs within primary care (Deloitte 2012, p.4) and national policy is directing an emphasis on moving care closer tohome to improve patient experiences and reduce cost to the overall system. The NHS Five Year Forward View (2014) indicates that the foundationof the NHS should remain as list-based primary care (where GPs are contracted to service patient lists where the patients are registered) via a range of service models, with a stronger role in prevention and condition management.

Seconding a Specialist Practitioner in Mental Health into an Integrated Discharge Team

In October 2010 a proposal was made by a multiagency group of Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWP), the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Cheshire West and Chester Council, to place a specialist practitioner in mental health into an integrated discharge team.The aim of introducing this role was to facilitate the timely, safe discharge of patients over 65 years of age with possible dementia, delirium, or mental health issues, who would otherwise experience increased length of stay or delayed discharge from hospital.

Early Career Networking – What can the North West AHP Network do for you?

On 11 March 2015 the North West Allied Health Professions Network hosted ‘Early Career Networking – What can the North West AHP Network do for you?’ at the Macron Stadium, Bolton. The event was attended by approximately 80 allied health professionals (AHP) from a range of disciplines, from dietitians to speech and language therapists, who are in the early stages of their career.In 2014, Norah Flood, the Chair of the North West AHP Network, set an informal objective of broadening engagement and encouraging new faces to the network.
