Assistant Practitioners and Administering Medicines

In order to gain a fuller picture of current practice, and to provide updated guidance for organisations, the North West Workforce Modernisation Hub (and NHS North West) commissioned Firefly Research and the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York to carry out a scoping study into the administration of medicines by Assistant Practitioners in the North West. The research report has now been published and is accompanied by this Hot Topic as a means of summarising the report for eWIN.

Development of a Trust-wide Workforce Information Dashboard

The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) has recently developed a single monthly workforce information dashboard, both at Trust level and for each service line, to enable the effective use of workforce information across the Trust.  This dashboard was developed in response to internal audit reports, which identified that improvements were required across the Trust for the reporting of performance metrics, of which workforce information was one element. 

Shared Values: A Value Based Training Practice programme for Health Care Assistants and Support Workers

The recent reports of both Francis (2013) and Cavendish (2013) set out a requirement to develop training and educational pathways for all health care assistants and support staff. A code of conduct for support staff has also been developed by Skills for Health and Skills for Care (March 2013) and the Government have included support staff development as one of 11 national priority projects in their mandate to Health Education England (DOH 2013) and Talent to Care (2013).Support workers make up around a third of the caring workforce and often spend more time with service users than nurses.

GP Tool for HEYH Region

The primary aim of the GP Tool is to collect information on primary care practice staff. An Integrated Workforce Planning Tool to Meet the Mental Health and Psychological Wellbeing Needs of Children and Young People

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) integrated workforce planning tool was first developed as part of the CAMHS National Workforce Programme (2011) and has since been further developed by Cme in the Community, in partnership with the Child and Maternal Health Intelligence Network (ChiMat), where it is hosted.

Trust pioneers new apprenticeship scheme

Healthcare Science Apprenticeships The scheme created by Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber to develop a new training route for Bands 2 - 4 in Healthcare Science. Apprentice medical laboratory assistants, Rachel Taylor and Nathan Baldwin, work for laboratory medicine while Amy Bond and Amy Martin have been assigned to both Neurophysiology and Cardio-Respiratory in a brand new apprenticeship role.
