Human Book Club for Healthcare Learners

A Human Book Club event was held to help student nurses and Trainee Nursing Associates
gather evidence for the communication section of their portfolios. The Human Book Club
provided an opportunity for healthcare learners to get a better understanding of how an
individual’s culture, social identity and expressed beliefs impact on the choices they make
about their care and treatment.

Advancing Professional Education Through Health Information Systems (APE-THIS)

The overall aim of the Advancing Professional Education Through Health Information Systems (APE-THIS) project was to provide the infrastructure required to facilitate enhanced understanding for nursing, and other healthcare students, of health information systems and the value of health information, thereby ensuring that graduating students hold essential informatics competencies prior to taking up healthcare posts. This would be achieved through connectivity from specified university computers to a dedicated mirror of the Allscripts training platform at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

Learning Matters Awards 2017 - Case Study series

A series of studies have been curated to capture best practice, and highlight innovations, from the joint Health Education England (HEE) working across the North West and Voluntary Sector North West ‘Learning Matters’ awards 2017. The awards are part of a cross sector adult learning campaign delivered for the health and care sector through a number of key regional partnerships and collaborations. The overarching theme of the awards is simple: lifelong learning is good for people, organisations and health.

Equitable Placement Allocation for Orthoptic Students

Availability of placement sites for orthoptic students has been an ongoing issue for many years. Many placement sites go above and beyond to accommodate students often at short notice, creating added pressure to already busy departments. The Equitable Placement Allocation scheme was designed by the three universities currently offering the orthoptic degree (The University of Liverpool, The University of Sheffield and Glasgow Caledonian) as a way to relieve the pressure on these sites and hopefully allow for a surplus of placement sites available for orthoptic students.

Placement Retention

Health Education England identifies the need to improve retention in commissioned pre-registration courses. Research locally and nationally indicates the importance of the placement experience in reducing attrition. The North West is home to a wide range of good practice in this area and this page hosts examples of some of the great work from both the HEI and service provider partners.

Development of an Accelerated Post-Registration Nursing Programme: from RN Adult to RN Child nursing

The initiative arose from the identification of a workforce development need in the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH), part of Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT). CMFT secured funding, in August 2015, from Health Education England (HEE) working across the North West in conjunction with the University of Salford to co-design, pilot and evaluate a curriculum and commissioning specification for a 12 month Accelerated Children and Young People’s (CYP) Programme.
