Professional Mental Health Network

In 2009 a professional mental health network was set up for the Blackburn with Darwen area, which is very unique in that it is exclusively for mental health professionals from across all sectors, and has a specialism around BME. It allows different organisations to share information, combine resources and undertake joint projects to improve signposting to mental health and mainstream services and has approximately 280 members who can drop in an out as necessary. 

Redeployment of Staff Affected by Service Reconfiguration

Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust recently embarked upon widespread service reconfiguration in line with regional initiatives, which led to the merger and closure of services at various sites across the Trust. As a result this redeployment  programme was launched to place all displaced employees into alternative substantive posts. This allowed 882 employees to be redeployed within the Trust, which saved circa £56,000 per person in redundancy costs.

End of Life Care Service Model

The Central and Eastern Cheshire End of Life Care (EoLC) Service Model  was designed to facilitate a seamless, collaborative approach to leading and facilitating education and best practice in EoLC across Central and Eastern Cheshire. Its key objective is to improve the experience of care for patients, families and care workers. This has also led to significant cost savings, helped secure future funding and has had a real impact on the workforce in regards to training opportunities. 

Agile Working

Lancashire Care Foundation Trust has adopted the innovative practice of agile working, to help its workforce become more flexible, so that people can work from various locations.This has included redesigning the office layout to make it more light and airy, aiming to become a paperless office, and putting in place the necessary  tools for flexible working. This has led to increased effectiveness, reduced costs, better use of technology and better quality of life for staff.

Thrombolysis Telestroke Service Out of Hours Solution to Stroke

The Cumbria and Lancashire Telestroke Network is a collaboration between six Acute Trusts (across 8 sites) and seven PCTs in Cumbria and Lancashire whose aim was to deliver 24/7 stroke thrombolysis for patients with acute ischaemic stroke in a rural area. This has demonstrated cost-savings on long-term care for the stroke patients, and had a positive impact on the workforce due to improved service delivery.

Implementation of Dual Model Supervision

A model of consultative clinical supervision has been implemented for a team of genetic counsellors at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, based at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. This integrative, multi-theoretical, dual model, which incorporates recommendations from the AGNC, combines individual and team-based supervision, and has helped the Trust win awards for excellence in; patient care, team-working and partnerships.

Tate Liverpool: Opening Doors

Tate Liverpool’s Opening Doors Programme has been running since 1997, in partnership with local NHS Trusts such as Liverpool PCT and Mersey Care. Each year it is aimed at cross-sector professionals, working within broad health & wellbeing settings, with the aim of empowering them to use art as a way of supporting service users.  This has had a positive impact on the mental health of staff, as well as helping patients to express their creativity in a constructive therapeutic way.

Shared HR Services in Greater Manchester

The Greater Manchester (GM) PCT Shared HR Service was built with the main aim of keeping the PCT’s HR functions resilient throughout major NHS reforms, and also to ensure sustainability of the service following the abolition of PCTs whilst driving down costs. This service went live on 1st April 2011, the same date a the TCS transfers, and since then has demonstrated significant progress towards the estimated managerial costs saving of 40%. 

Stockport FT's Occupational Health Department - Hub and Spoke Model

Stockport’s Occupational Health Department, located within Stockport Foundation Trust’s Stepping Hill Hospital, serves both the Trust and the local PCT, as well as a few private and public sector bodies. This department operates as a Hub and Spoke Model, which has received positive feedback from commissioners and continues to meet key performance indicators within acceptable variances.
